Thinking on baby's names, what do I choose?

A few days ago we were commenting on our Facebook page about how we had chosen the name of our children.

I found curious how the inspiration moments to choose the perfect name of our baby come on different situations… sometimes even funny ones, watching a television series or simply having a revealing dream.

Depending on the family, sometimes the baby's names are chosen by family traditions. Naming the child with the name of the father/mother or the grandfather/grandmother. An option is to choose a different name you like and, as a second name, choose one that represents a loved one.

On other occasions, we can choose the name according to the names of the baptism godparents or, in case we have siblings and we like their names, they always represent an option.

Anyway, there are names that we have always liked all our life. Since we played dolls with friends, or when we talked about the day we would form a family. In that case, when the moment arrives, we have the name more than decided. The problem comes when your life partner doesn’t like it! Think again!

As well as decoration or fashion, the names are also defined by trends, eras and even famous and influential people, because they represent a lifestyle and attractive personality or because we wish our children to carry some special or exotic names that would give them a distinctive touch.

We think that, in the future, baby names will be even more diverse and international. Each country and culture have its typical names, but in a few years, thanks to the great cultural diversity we are already living in, we’ll se an increase of names coming from other cultures and populations. We’ll even see names composed by different roots. Something is already happening in the United States and Mexico.

If there’s something I like about names and it always interested me, is to know its meaning. It’s like discovering a treasure. You realize that some of them go back to centuries and centuries before, but they are highly topical. Others have a deep meaning or they originated because someone, on its day, made a great deed. Many of them refer to things of nature or to stars and constellations. And others are inspired by such amazing continents as Africa.

There’s no doubt that picking the baby's name takes its time, and even if it seems easy, it gets complicated, especially when many times we associate personalities to the names, such as Daniel “The Menace”. That’s the moment when we start to predict the future and see how our baby is feared by half neighborhood! And when we decide to ask our friends and relatives what do they think about the chosen name or what would they think that are good choices, that’s when a true unending debate arises. Some will think that such name is cute and others will tell you: “How could you ever think such name? Poor little child!”

Anyway, although it seems a pretty easy task, it’s not. Sometimes the best thing to do is to just surrender to the moments of inspiration and intuition. Many parents don’t decide the name of their children until the baby is born. That so special minute provides the parents the key to choose the perfect name. A gesture, a smile, or just the baby’s face indicates the parents what will be his or her destiny, of course, when it comes to names…
